In this new tax compliance workshop, you will get answers to your complex Form 1099 questions
and learn detailed, yet very practical, information on applying regulatory requirements for:
- State and local requirements for tax reporting, including state equivalents for Forms 1099, plus
requirements to report new independent contractors and withhold tax in some instances
- Disregarded entities -- how this regulatory concept works, and how to track the beneficial owner of
income through the correct documentation to identify the person or entity that must be reported on a
Form 1099 when you have situations such as an LLC owned by one or more individuals, an LLC
owned by another business entity, or when your payee is a sole proprietor, or is using a DBA name
- P-card payments and the Form 1099-MISC reporting requirements -- what the IRS actually
requires for 2009 reporting of payments made with your organization's purchasing cards, travel &
entertainment cards, credit cards or debit cards, and what the anticipated impact will be from new
tax law and regulations
- Your tax information reporting requirements beyond the 1099-MISC, such as Forms 1099-INT,
1099-S, and 1099-C
- Legal settlements, payments to claimants for various types of damages, and payments to
attorneys and law firms -- what is reportable, what is exempt from being reported, and whether to
report the attorney or the claimant or both depending on specific facts and circumstances
- A unified understanding of the relationship among three very important sets of federal tax
regulations: backup withholding of tax from payments you make; the IRS B Notice process and
what it specifically requires you to do; and the IRS penalty regime for errors and failures in Form
1099 tax compliance.
Learning Objectives:
- Document the indentity of payees for tax compliance purposes
- Identify payments that require tax information reporting to the IRS or state government
- Apply specialized tax regulatory rules affecting payments for damages and payments to attorneys
and law firms
- Identify payment situations in which federal or state tax regulations require tax to be withheld
